When it comes to the Gaza War - Seek the Truth

Given a recent anti Israel Guest Column on the Augusta Chronicle, I decided to share the column I sent in response to it. The biggest challenge was to fit my feelings and opinions in 300 words:

Thanks to the US and Egypt, the Gaza fighting has stopped for now. People on both sides no longer need to seek shelter against a deadly rain. This is a good opportunity to reflect on the reasons for the violence.

The Hamas Covenant, in its introduction, states: “Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it”. The Muslim Brotherhood, which Hamas claims to be a part of, is the ideological foundation of most of the groups which, claiming to speak in the name of Islam, are just political platforms to grab power and oppress others.

I am a dog lover; I currently own a feisty Jack Russell mix. But as a dog person, I understand that when a dog is poised to attack, you don’t offer it your hand to smell. Hamas is clearly determined to exterminate Israel, so can we ask Israel to just offer its hand to Hamas? Israel is, in my opinion, fully justified to defend itself against the onslaught of missiles thrown at its civilian population.

Many say “but see how many more Palestinians died than Israelis” That is because Israel builds bomb shelters for its people. Hamas, by contrast, builds attack tunnel to burrow under the border to attack Israelis and puts its missile launching platforms amid civilians. While all Israeli casualties were civilians, most of the Palestinian casualties were Hamas operatives.

Don’t believe me – seek the truth, check the full text of the Hamas Covenant and the full text of Israel’s Declaration of Independence on the website of the Avalon Project at Yale University. It will help you understand their respective goals. Make up your own mind.
